Top 5 Disorders Which Usually Go Unnoticed

When it comes to disorders, diseases or mental illnesses, not all of them have identifiable symptoms. Some may be identifiable, but yet we choose to ignore them thinking this can’t be a disorder. Here in this article I am writing about the top five disorders which go usually unnoticed or probably ignored.

1. Trichotillomania

This is an impulse disorder in which the person who suffer from it will have an urge to pull out his or her hair which may lead to noticeable hair loss and balding. This urge to pull is usually triggered by depression or stress. Scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, legs, arms, hands, nose and the pubic areas are the common areas from where the hair is pulled out. But in children the most common area is the scalp. The bad part about this disorder is, the people who suffers from this disorder have good chances of having anxiety, depression and obsessive–compulsive disorder.

2.Onychophagia & Dermatophagia

Onychophagia is a disorder in which the person who suffers from it has the urges to bite the nails frequently. This disorder can lead to microbial and viral infections such as paronychia as there are chances for breaking the skin on the cuticle. Fingernails may become severely deformed after years of nail biting.

Dermatophagia is a type of Impulse Control Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and the sufferer bites the skin around the nails often until it bleeds which leads to discoloration over time. Some people tend to chew on the inside of their mouth, cheeks, and/or lips as well.

3. Photic sneeze reflex

This is a condition in which if a person exposed to bright light he or she starts to sneeze uncontrollably. This condition affects 18 to 35% of the population yet its exact mechanism of action is not well known.

4. Clinical Depression

Clinical depression also known as Major depressive disorder is a disorder characterized by a persistent depressive or low mood which is often accompanied by low self-esteem and by a loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. Studies have shown that around 60% of the people who commit suicide had depression or another mood disorder. An adult can exhibit a very low mood and may report multiple physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, or digestive problems as the symptoms. But children often show irritable mood rather than a depressed mood. Also they will lose interest in school.

5. Food Allergy

Food allergies are becoming more and more common in several parts of the world. But nonetheless, many people doesn’t really identify it, especially in case of children. The most common type of food allergy which go undetected is the allergy to bananas. Usually it is not that serious, but in some rare cases Banana allergy can lead to a serious fall in blood pressure. Other reactions include itching of the mouth and throat, uticaria (hives), angiodema (swelling), cramps, diarrhoea, and wheezing. So if your child is giving you a hard time by not eating bananas, you may want to see a doctor to make sure it is not related to allergy.
